About Birds In Focus
Birds In Focus is a collaboration between Bob Gress, Judd Patterson, and David Seibel. All three are active bird photographers from the state of Kansas who share a vision to deliver the best bird photography from North America and beyond. While the idea arose in 2005, it took several years of brainstorming and intense bird photography before we felt the site should go live in 2009. Each of the three founding photographers is profiled below.

Over 3,000 of his photos have appeared in books, magazines, posters, postcards, interpretive signs, and educational screensavers. He has coauthored The Guide to Kansas Birds and Birding Hot Spots, Faces of the Great Plains: Prairie Wildlife, Watching Kansas Wildlife: A Guide to 101 Sites, Kansas Wetlands: A Wildlife Treasury, and Kansas Wildlife. Bob is director of the Great Plains Nature Center (GPNC) in Wichita Kansas. The GPNC is a cooperative project between the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, and the City of Wichita Park Department. Purchasing any of Bob’s photographic projects from the GPNC supports the educational mission of this unique facility.

David's photographs on Birds In Focus

David Seibel is a native Kansan and lifelong birder. He holds a Ph.D. in ornithology from the University of Kansas and is a biology professor, author, poet, and popular lecturer as well as an avid nature photographer. His passion for birds has taken him to three continents, six countries (including a transformative expedition to Amazonian Brazil with his daughter Emily), and most of the lower 48 states. An expert in field identification by sight and sound, he has seen more than 620 species in the United States, and 400 in Kansas alone. His knowledge of birds, photography, and computer technology converged in 2003 when he undertook the new art of digiscoping (super telephoto digital photography through a telescope), which quickly propelled him into a second career in photography with professional Canon equipment. He has now captured tens of thousands of digital images of birds and has numerous publications to his credit, including the cover photo for a recent edition of the journal North American Birds. An award-winning faculty member at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, Seibel has also published several scholarly and educational works and is currently a coauthor and contributing photo editor for the authoritative Birds of Kansas, to be published by the University Press of Kansas.
